Awesome Adaptations v.2 - Shakespeare Edition

Shakespeare.jpgWilliam Shakespeare: Playwright, poet, actor, greatest writer basically of ever.  You've probably heard of him. Of course you have. Maybe you love Shakespeare, maybe you hate him (who am I kidding, nobody hates Shakespeare). You probably studied him in school. You probably think you know everything you need to know about Shakespeare, right? You probably watched movie adaptations of his plays. It's possible you've seen them all. Even the modern adaptations like Romeo + JulietBut do you know how many film adaptations of his works there really are? Before I started writing this, I thought I knew. But I was oh so very wrong.

ROMEO AND JULIET
HAMLET
OTHELLO
A  MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM
MACBETH
HENRY
THE TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA
THE TEMPEST
THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

KING LEAR

ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA
JULIUS CAESAR
TWELFTH NIGHT

This is by no means a complete list, there are lists out there in the interwebs longer than this one, it's dizzying, really. And it seems pretty obvious that the lists are only going to get longer, as more movies based on Shakespeare's works are produced. I don't think they are going to stop any time soon because he may be long dead, but Shakespeare never goes out of style.

What are some of your thoughts on Shakespeare adaptations? Do you prefer modern versions or period ones that are true to the original plays? Did I miss any of your favourites?
